Phnom Penh - As part of a joint scoping mission undertaken in Cambodia by the ILO, UNICEF, and UNDP under the leadership of the UNRC from 28 August to 1 September, a National Consultative Workshop was co-organized by the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Cambodia and the United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office to discuss how the Global Accelerator can support the country’s efforts to promote decent jobs creation and expand social protection within the framework of the country’s new Pentagonal Strategy. 

The workshop provided a platform to discuss Cambodia’s key priorities and sectors to inform the development of a national roadmap with a view to reaching its employment and social protection objectives, strengthening cooperation, and facilitating just transitions to low carbon and digital economies.

Chaired by HE Dr Phan Phalla, State Secretary, Ministry of Economy and Finance,  the National Consultative workshop was attended by government representatives, including government officials from the Ministries of Economy and Finance, Labour and Vocational Training, Tourism, and the National Social Security Fund. Other key stakeholders participating in the event were representatives from the UN agencies involved in the Global Accelerator implementation, the Cambodian Federation of Employers and Business Associations (CAMFEBA), the National Trade Union Council (NTUC), the European Union, the Asian Development Bank and the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation.

During a separate meeting with the members of the mission the Minister of Labour and Vocational Training in Cambodia, Heng Sour, expressed the country´s interest in becoming one of the pathfinder countries of the Global Accelerator, highlighting that the government will focus on skills development and expanding social protection as key priorities to be outlined in the national roadmap.

The event held on 31 August 2023 in Phnom Penh, showcased Cambodia´s determination to join the Global Accelerator and to continue close cooperation with UN initiatives in Cambodia.
