News Release |

Colombia has just joined the Global Accelerator as one of the pathfinder countries of the initiative. The government, represented by the National Planning Department and in consultation with the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit, confirmed the country’s official commitment to join the initiative on 6 March 2024.

The official expression of interest was signed by Juan Miguel Gallego, Deputy Director of Prospective and National Development, and sent to Mireia Villar Forner, UN Resident Coordinator in Colombia, recognizing the importance of the initiative to accelerate recovery and socio-economic development.

Consultations with national stakeholders have taken place to discuss the relevance and value-added of the Accelerator in the country. On 13 February 2024, the UN Resident Coordinator chaired the first meeting of the advisory group on the future of the social protection system, which will serve as the national committee mandated to support the implementation of the Global Accelerator in Colombia.

“This Committee aims to define the roadmap for a universal social protection system in Colombia, ensuring inclusion and equity as a strategic pillar of sustainable development," stated the resident coordinator at the first meeting of the committee which is comprised of government institutions, UN agencies, and other development partners including the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank.

Colombia is the second country from Latin America to join the Global Accelerator to advance progress on universal social protection and decent work conditions with an emphasis on productive inclusion, social welfare, and just transitions.
